Freely available reference managers

Citace.com

  • creates bibliographic references in accordance with ČSN ISO 690
  • references can be created by filling out a form or automatically generated using identificators such as ISBN, ISSN or DOI
  • after logging in, it also offers reference management and exporting (to Word or PDF)

Zotero

  • can be installed either as a Firefox addon or a separate application (Zotero Standalone) with extensions to Google Chrome, Safari or Firefox
  • allows creating references in various citation styles
  • great advantage is automatic extraction of data directly from web pages (including library catalogues)

Mendeley

  • reference and publication manager allowing to store, organise and share personal bibliographic collection
  • works as an online service with limited functionality, full functionality in standalone application (Mendeley Desktop)
  • for local use on the computer, use the freely available Reference Manager and its extension Web Importer which allows direct import of bibliographic references and documents from a vast amount of academic databases and full-text resources

 CiteULike

  • allows storing, sharing and organizing of bibliographic references
  • works as a online service, there is no software to install
  • citation styles: APA, Chicago, Elsevier, Harvard, MLA, Nature, Oxford, Science, Turabian or Vancouver
  • references can be enhanced with full texts and tags, and shared

  • commercial product from the creators of Citace.com
  • supports over 6000 citations styles including ČSN ISO 690
  • offers extensions for Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox and an extension for Microsoft Word
  • this manager is available free to all students and employees of Faculty of Arts, Faculty of Humanities and Faculty of Social Sciences of Charles University, log in here - use your login name and password to CAS/SIS

EndNote Basic

  • online version of desktop application EndNote, free since 2013
  • extended functionality for users of Web of Science
  • how to gain access:
    • register to EndNote Basic from a university IP address
    • or, off campus, use Remote access (Shibboleth) on this site and than register to EndNote Basic
    • then you can use the application from any computer (just log in to EndNote Basic) for a year
    • after a year Endnote Basic may require you to sign in to it on campus or through the Remote access (Shibboleth)

RefWorks

  • cloud-based service for storing, sharing and organising bibliographic references and full texts, citing in scholarly texts and creating bibliographies from the company ProQuest
  • each student or employee with a valid Charles University e-mail address can register for free access
  • you then get 10GB of storage and possibility of unlimited sharing inside and outside the institution
